I am good at web GUI development. What can I be called?

I am a freak in web application development with Dreamweaver, Visual Web Developer, Visual Studio .Net, I do more of GUI - and good designs too. I know a little of C#.Net language. What can I possibly be called in the Web Application Development field?

I am good at web GUI development. What can I be called?
Designing GUIs alone is not enough... you need to be able to write the code to make them work too...

Anyone who can operate a mouse can design GUIs, but it takes skill to write the code to make them do anything. If you can do this part too, call yourself a "programmer", otherwise call yourself a "keen amateur".

What is the advanced technology in web development ?

The "advanced" technology in Web development is actually a fairly broad topic. "Basic" technology would be considered the use HTML tags to create Web pages which post input from forms to the server and provides a response.

Over the years, technology has advanced in several facets. One of those is maintaining "state" (or remembering) the user who visited the Web site. This was done through cookies, hidden form fields on HTTP POST requests back to the server (also known as a "SESSION" in ASP).

Other technologies, such as CGI, variations of CGI in different languages and the use of XML along with XSLT (XSL transforms to format the XML data) have started to modernize the creation of fancy Web pages from data presented in a standard format --without the need to have applications themselves perform the generation of output.

Newer or more apropos "popular" paradigms, such as AJAX (a newly coined buzzword) which do nothing more than have javascript on a page make non-visible requests to the server then dynamically update the User Interface from the asynchronous callback results in a standardized fashion have been used in the past.

Advanced technology, in a nutshell, combines the several portions of server-side and client-side technologies that have accrued over the years. A lot of people (in theory) tend to do most special transformations to data through XSLT/XML on the server side and attempt to keep generated code to a level which most browsers understand (to get the largest audience). AJAX application still require the server to perform special processing to return data back to the client that it will present to the user... however, JavaScript needs to be enabled and needs to support whatever UI changes come from that request.

What is the advanced technology in web development ?
AJAX = Asynchronous JavaScript And XML
Reply:Web 2.0 and Mashups: a website or web application that uses content from more than one source to create a completely new service.

Is learning html coding for web development hard?

In the future I want to be able to maintain websites for different companies. I'm talking a html coding class and probably in the summer, dreamweaver. What do you all think?

Is learning html coding for web development hard?
It sounds like you're doing great. Many web developers/maintainers have little web experience before they start. Often, they are in small companies, where they volunteer to do it. Doing an HTML/dreamweaver course is certainly a good way to go about it.

In order to get a job though, it is usually good to show your portfolio (i.e. sites you created). A good starting point is to make a site on a subject you like (whatever to start, though preferably something commercial). Make sure the site is tip-top, with everything working and professional (no loud colours or grammatical errors). If you don't have any ideas, ask a friend or a friend of a friend if you can make a site for their business (maybe you know a local hairdresser or something that could use a very basic site). You won't get paid to start, but after a couple of sites, you'll be on your way.

If you need inspiration, look at sites people have created, and do something similar. Don't be afraid if you find something which looks hard, just do what you can do, but make it good (don't be slack!).

Good luck!
Reply:HTML is very easy, here is a good tutorial http://www.htmlgoodies.com/primers/html/

It's just there is no need to learn HTML since there are many tools, Such as Dreamweaver or Visual Studio that do all the HTML coding for you. What is more important and is harder is to learn other languages you will need to develop web sites, such as PHP, ASP, VBScript, JavaScript etc.
Reply:This is not really hard to understand a web coding.

The key of web coding is tag.

If you have known well about these tags, I think you will not face difficulty in building a website.

A website design is the most important thing.

If you build a website, and the layout design is poor (eg. choosing a contrast colors), I think nobody will visit our website.

So, according to me the most difficult in building a website is website design.

It's difficult to invite people to visit and enjoy our website through its layout. It's not easy.

But, if you have an artistic sense, I think this is not a big problem for you.

I think the coding is easier than a web design.

Good luck........
Reply:Well learning HTML is not hard, if you enjoy actually learning it and doing it. I have seen people have the worst time doing it because they didn't enjoy it. An i think its a great idea about the 2 classes you wanna take, i took both and they both helped me a lot. I would also recommend looking up a server-side programming class, i would wait till after you do html and dreamweaver classes because theres a lot to server-side programming and needs your full attention. But It will teach you how to do shopping carts, and now a days a lot of people want you to maintain those for them more then just the site information. Not to mention it's something good to learn and add to your resume. Also, i dont know if your html class will teach you this, should, but if it doesn't learn how to do a Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) that is becoming very popular now a days. But, a good site to check out, if you run into any HTML problems or wanna learn CSS on your own is http://www.w3schools.com/default.asp. Its not just great for HTML and CSS, but it has many other popular programming languages, not all, but most and gives the basics about each of them. But i agree with everyone else, its not keeping up the sites and doing it that is the problem, its keeping people interested in your site that is the hard part. You might think something looks great, but if you ask a average computer user they might hate it. Best thing to do is ask multiple people questions an ask what they like and dont like about it, and how you could improve the site. Best advice will come from the most honest people you know, so ask them first. Good Luck
Reply:I don't think it's hard. To me the hard part was the graphic design, making an attractive site, but I have virtually no artistic talent.
Reply:While learning HTML won't hurt, there is a bit more to website upkeep than just knowing HTML. Most companies maintain the website using their own IT department, or outsource the work. If you are working in an office environment, there are other programs that may be better suited to making you more valuable to employers, such as PowerPoint, Excel and other office suite type software.

Please give me your opinion on this. The tuition is 4 classes a week, of 3 hours duration each. And this is for 6 weeks.

Is this enough?

Is this web development course well rounded?
It's both more than enough, and also NOT enough, all a the same time.

Here's the problem... a truly successful, QUALITY website takes a large number of diverse skills that are rarely bundled up in one person. For example...

1) Design and layout and usability studies... the creative/artsy stuff.

2) Web programming, database design, writing program specifications... the software engineering stuff.

3) Writing for the web... tailoring content to be search-engine-friendly, developing strategies to successfully "market" a website, managing a flow of incoming data from contributors (to keep the site "live" and updated).... the advertising and writing end.

4) Managing database backups, managing and maintaining relations with the registered users... the "boss", administrative, manager and IT department stuff.

A great way to measure what direction you want to go, and the skills that apply to the field that interests you... have a look at the "job roles" over on Brainbench... they recommend a specific set of certification tests based on the job role you're after. Some of the tests are free, most aren't... but you can look at the outlines of each test for free, and it will give you an idea of what topics you'll want to cover.
Reply:NO man this is not web development

It is only web designing(for it, it is sufficient)

Development means Server Side Scripting in any of the language such as ASP, ASP.NET, JSP or PHP.
Reply:That should be more than enough to get started. Once you get into it you'll see what you're interested in and focus on that. If you're into pure HTML then you can focus on that. Most people use dreamweaver, its a pretty nice tool.

I think if you take that class you'll do fine.
Reply:This would be a good start if you have never had any experience at all with web design. I do this for a living and most of the listed software is out of date but the methods should still be the same. If I were truly trying to learn from these classes I would focus my energy on studying HTML (xhtml) JavaScript, and Cascading Style Sheets. You do not need any specific software to get started doing web development, just a good text editor (notepad) a browser (firefox) and a graphics manipulation program Gimp, paint shop pro, or the industry standard Adobe Photoshop.

Something that I do not see mentioned is SEO or search engine optimization which is very important if you want people to be able to find your web page.

AJAX is also something that is not mentioned in the list and it stands for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. It is one of the most powerful implementations of web technologies today.

Also if you are planning to use the firefox browser (I highly recommend it) get the Web Developer Tool Bar and FireBug add-ons. They will make your browser an integral tool for the development of websites by extending your browsers capability so that you can study how other people have engineered some of your favorite web sites.

If you design your sites to be compatible with Firefox, Internet Explorer 6 or 7, and Safari you will cover the vast majority of all web browsers used on the market today.
Reply:No, I believe this aint really enough. Well this course seems to be a start but I dont really see any serious web programming in your syllabus. If you are just planning to become a designer then this would help, but if you are looking to be a developer this wouldnt suffice.

Try to go for a more practical oriented course as yours seems to be more into theories. And look for a course that involves serious web programming both server side and client side and also any popular accompanying DBMS.

I would suggest PHP/MySQL to be a good start and slowly move onto ASP, ASP.NET, C#, Perl, Java, JSP along with Oracle and MS SQLServer along with your above syllabus.

What's a decent laptop specification needed for web designing and development?

Hi guys, with all the new gizmoz coming and going so quickly, it is quite hard to choose. I want to get a laptop so that it would help me to study/develope/design good websites? And i dont want to splash out alot of money for a laptop because i'm on a low budget. What kind of specifications do you think is needed to decently run Adobe Photoshop, Flash and Dreamweaver simultaneously without causing the laptop to lag. I am purchasing an external hard disk to store my work, so i dont need a laptop a with large storage capacity. Do i need a good graphic card/accelerator since i'm not going to do anything else other than web designing and browsing sites. Does Dreamweaver 8, Flash 8 and Photoshop CS2 work well on Microsoft's Vista Home Edition?

Really appreciate all your input..Thanks a million..

What's a decent laptop specification needed for web designing and development?
additional ram and a good video card would be great, but under windows vista, you can hardly find one. your dreamweaver apps will work well, but will it be installed using vista? try to use the new dreamweaver the dreamweaver cs3, that's the latest one for dreamweaver

Can I find a web development job with only a Associates in Web Development?

I've found that when merely stating during an interview that I was pursuing my associate in CIW (Certified Internet Webmaster) helped boost my employability. It certainly goes a long way to have a qualification. But, IT is a profession where experience speaks louder than qualification. Even if its just building websites for friends or for their dad's business(es) DOES show committment, and that you're a serious candidate for the role.

On an additional note, you can find loads of self-learning books about various web development languages, their compatible databases, scripting languages, etc from your local library. I'd highly recommend the Dummy books. I personally found it very down-to-earth, funny and useful. For example, 'Web development for Dummies' is a good start.

Good luck with your job search.

What skills do I need to learn to start a web design and development business?

I have 22 years in SW engineering, but mostly with MF's, Unix, no windows or web dev experience. I want my own business--no more corporate life! I'm looking for a list of skills and the most efficient way to acquire them. I'm a fast learner.

What skills do I need to learn to start a web design and development business?
Learn many different languages, mainly:

-HTML

-CSS

-Javascript

and optionally:

-databases

-flash

-perl

-python

Windows wouldn't be completely necessary, but you should have a basic understanding.

I recommend the O'Reilly series ( http://www.oreilly.com/pub/topic/webserv... ), as a great reference material selection. As for acquiring skills, many places offer web design courses, though this may no be preferable if you learn faster than the course moves.

Frankly, the best way to get experience is to grab a couple reference books, do a few online tutorials, then just jump in. Challenge yourself to try new things, build features, make things look good. once you're comfortable with one language, try to combine it's uses with other languages. Innovate!

Good luck!
Reply:The skills being recommended are a great list if you wanted to work for someone in that field but they arent the skills you need to become your own boss.

Ive set people up in business on internet for as long as its been internet. Actually you can outsource most of the needs very cheaply to someplace like India. Having an SW background will be a benefit in designing what you want.

All of the programming skills in the world wont help you to run an internet business. I see many wonderfully created, useful, easy to use, well priced sites that fail. The people lack skills in running a business, in SEO (internet version of advertising, Search Engine Optimization), in finding and managing skills in others where theirs might lack.

Another thought:

There is always a need for well run servers to support everyone elses internet ventures. I run 2 linux servers out of my house on machines that were too crappy to run the latest windows games. They both have hundreds of email accounts, dozens of domains, they host online gaming worlds. I barter for my webmaster services by offering on online /home for wannabe webmasters.
Reply:If you don't mind using Microsoft technology, I would suggest the following site:

http://asp.net/downloads/archived/

If you are like me, I find reading remedial manuals a slow and painful process. I found Microsoft's "Community Starter Kit", a free, fully functional application for running a community based website. The code is free and I have extended it for my personal projects. You will also need to get a copy of

Building Websites with the ASP.NET Community Starter Kit by Cristian Darie and K.Scott Allen

I recommend the eBook version. It will give you a clear road map for tackling ASP.NET, C#, HTML and SQL. Web Service providers like DiscountASP.net will setup the CSK for you as part of their service. It's no cakewalk but it helped me learn new technologies using a real life app.
Reply:No easy way around it, learn website design using the various languages, scripts and database access and manipulation.

Since you will be doing it for profit, you also will have to be creative since the designs you come up with have to be of your own making, not copied from somewhere else.

Some basic things to learn for website creation: html, css, javascript...

intermediate: flash, cgi, perl, php, python...

advance: database manipulation MySql mostly, but in a corporate environment it can be anything Oracle, Sybase, DB2...

Easy way to get started is to install a web server on your personal computer and go from there.
Reply:There are several different technologies going on with the web today, flash, html, dhtml (although the latter two are more rare today), asp programming, shockwave, and others, the best thing to do is to find a starting point and then go from there.

Maybe first learning some asp programming along with html and dhtml. Then moving onto the web integrated technologies such as flash, and shockwave, and going from there would be best.

The other thing to do is to find some books on web programming that are recent publications and see what they say.

As far as where to go, you could check into some college courses to see what web programming courses are available.
Reply:i suggest going and taking some community classes at the local community college. that way you can learn on the professional programs, often getting 7-10 classes in and only pay about $79-100.

then, you'll see what you're good and know where to start, whether it be dreamweaver, photoshop, flash, or silverlight.
Reply:I would also partner with a graphic artist. Learn all you can from here w3schools.com

Does anyone have any leads for custom development web-projects in Belgium?

I run a software development company in Belgium and we have good references for custom development web projects. Projects are typically done using open source (mySQL, RubyOnRails) and on low cost internet providers. Main development activities are outsourced on RentACoder, however all customer contact for definition, detailed analysis, training and support is done locally. This outsourcing is transparent for the customer, however it allows us to cut traditional prices by 30% on average.

Our projects are targeted at the SME market in the area of sales automation, admin support, extranets, planning, and so on.

We are willing to discuss fair rates for serious leads. If you'd like to hear from us, send your number to ambrosia101@hotmail.com.

How is the career market for web development in US?

Depends on the area you're in. I'm in an area of the US that has a lot of engineers, had a number of dot.coms that went bust, and had a number of programmers laid off, but web developers who knew their stuff were still able to do consulting work, working for small to medium sized companies updating and/or maintaining their web sites. I use to hang out with a bunch of consultants when I taught or coordinated web design, so I could keep up with the latest trends (1-2 years ago).

How is the career market for web development in US?
IDK get on a computer and you may find the info you are looking 4.....
Reply:It is very competitive and difficult to find permanent jobs. As a consultant or contractor, fairly easy. Many companies in the U.S.are outsourcing development because it is cheaper. Even outsourcing to India, as seen with call centers.

If you want a career in web development, you need to be knowledgable in .NET environments and its associated languages. C# and Ajax are the popular languages right now. Many content management systems are based on these languages. Java is another language that has been staying around because many companies are building their web apps in Java.

How do you find clients if you want to get into web design/web development?

Most of my clients have come from word of mouth from other previous clients. One of my college professors has also sent me many referrals since he's always getting asked for names of web designers.

Starting with a volunteer project can get things rolling too - like a PTA group, or church or club and then you can start building a portfolio. People will want to look at what you've done.

Advertising in online directories specifically for web designers and web developers is also a good place to start. Marketing Tool is one of them and they have free and paid listings. http://www.marketingtool.com

I want to get into Web Design and Development? How many hours should I study a day?

How many hours should I be studying a day? In order to be really really good at it?

I want to get into Web Design and Development? How many hours should I study a day?
The best way of getting into web design and development, is to first design some websites, that you can use as references. Then go to some company, and say, this is what I can do for you.

Once you have a job, with people screaming at you, "We need this or that" or, "it doesn't look right in this browser or that browser" is when you will learn the most.
Reply:First you should decide whether you want to be in web design or development because those are two different fields.

Web Design is related to graphic designers and to the laying out of the pages in addition to styling them through using colours + images.

Web Development is related to coding the application. Coding the application might be related to HTML - CSS - JavaScript coding or Server side programming.

In all cases it is preferable that you be knowledgeable in HTML and CSS.

For server side development you should be able to code using wide spread technologies like PHP or .NET.

In the end, it is only when you work with experienced people you will start really learning. But to go there, you need to know the basics so that you get hired.

Hope this helps.
Reply:The more you study, the sooner you can start earning money at it. Hope that answers your question.
Reply:Depends on what you want to do

If you are talking about Current Windows style Development, then look at Visual Studio and .NET development which means anything from VB6 to Windows Internal Code Architecture... Basically its a full time study, unless you can intern on what you know, then its a full time job... either way, damned hard

if find right answers u will make ur business capacity greater than before..

I think that you can still make it. Just get some good SAP or Data Warehousing credentials (e.g. something related to Teradata).

After the certifications you can get a break into the domain and can then build your experience.

Should you study graphic design or web development when wanting to become a web designer?

That's a solid question if you have to choose. Speaking from personal experience, I fumbled my way through designing our company's webpage without much experience in either. I would say I would have benefitted more from having a graphic design background so that my layout would peak more interest (even though I'm proud of what I've done), since there are many free tools out there that make web-design as simple as cut and paste. Programmers are always going to find ways to make complex jobs easier, but you're still going to need a fertile imagination and a background in design to utilize the tools they have come up with and continue to develop.

To draw a comparison, if you were studying to be an architect, you wouldn't necessarily immerse yourself in the computer programs necessary to design architecture at the expense of learning the fundamentals of good form and design. The programs change, but the technical skill transcends the medium used to produce quality results.

Should you study graphic design or web development when wanting to become a web designer?
Study both, they are important. Find a course that covers both topics.

How is HTML and XHTML related and different? What implications does XHTML have on web development?

XHTML and HTML are related because they are both markup languages, which means they use elements -- such as %26lt;h1%26gt; or %26lt;p%26gt; or %26lt;div%26gt; -- to describe information in a document, so a Web browser can read them and interpret them.

They are different in the XHTML is modularized, while HTML is not. W3C's HTML specifications contain specific elements (tags) that are defined by W3C and have specific attributes.

XHTML instead groups display elements into modules, such as the table module, the text module, etc. Each module contains certain elements.

The reason for modularization in XHTML is to make it even more extensible than HTML. Since HTML has a fixed number of elements, it can only render those elements, and only in ways that comply with the HTML specification.

Because XHTML is modularized, you can create new modules as new technologies become available, and add new elements to those modules, meaning there's no theoretical limit to what XHTML can describe -- the same way there's no theoretical limit to what XML can describe.

And that means there's no theoretical limit to what a Web browser can do, so long as it understands an XHTML module being used by a site; eventually, XHTML will be able to tell Web browsers what a module does and how to render its elements, the same way XSLT can tell a Web browser what an XML document means and how to render it.

There are also technical differences in how you write HTML and XML, noticably in the use of attributes and closing tags. Certain XHTML elements require certain attributes (such as the %26lt;img%26gt; tag, which requires the src and alt attributes), and all XHTML tags must be closed, while certain HTML tags don't need to be closed (such as the %26lt;br%26gt; tag).

You can learn more about both by visiting http://www.w3.org.

Web development question:How to go for search engine Optimization without spending much time and money.?
When you are optimizing a webpage, don't bother too much about all search ranking aspect. The more you understand the more complicated it will be. What you need to do is to follow their guidelines.

1.) Make sure you have your main keyword included in your title

2.) Make sure you don't stuff keyword in meta tags and hope that search engine will rank you #1 in all keywords. Use only what your document is related to!

3.) Always remember to have %26lt;h1%26gt; tags in your document. This is extremely important and could add relevancy weight to your page.

4.) You first paragraph of your web document tells search engine what your content is all about. Have your keyword placed there will brings you benefits.

5.) Double check your document and make sure you have not missing HTML tags. If not, this tell search engine that your pages does not have a good layout as unclosed HTML tags will break a webpage design.

6.) Navigation structure. Provides a good navigation structure to BOTs. It will help them crawl your site quickly. A good structure should always have all subpages accessible for not more than 2 clicks away!

7.) Have your document title included in your URLs. Keep away from dynamic URLs.

You can also use some online toolkit to measure your document relevancy. Here is what I know as a good resource.

Web development company scam?

I met with a potential employer. He does not have an office and works out of coffee shops. He spent the first interview explaining to me about franchising and Macdonald's and how it got started. After that he says I can work 8-10 hours a week and get 3000USD a month, and after a few years 150,000 a year. It is some kind of web development company. I think it is a scam. Have you heard of this scam before?

Web development company scam?
In my opinion....Anything that leads solely on the basis of earning great amount of money is borderline scam in the least. If most of the talk is about money making and little about the company, would you be comfortable doing the same to others. Comparing the opportunity to franchising is inaccurate. A common misuse of terms in the industry. If your are seeking an opportunity in network marketing or multi-level marketing, I highly suggest that you study the industry prior to getting involved. There are studies to show that 97% quit or fail at home based businesses like this. There are ways to avoid this failure. It requires understanding the facts about the industry. I have a couple of helpful links to facts in my profile page here. I also have many other helpful links through much research of my own. I would be happy to pass them along. One of my personal favorites is http://www.vandruff.com/mlm.html

Now, don't take any of this the wrong way. I am not against building business through networking. I know the problems of the industry and seek solutions to build business around the issues.

Best Regards!
Reply:Its most likely a MLM (Multi Level Marketing company) from the sounds of things so without you giving us the name of the company Id say stay away.

Do a websearch and see what others have said but a rule of thumb when it comes to business is if it sounds too good to be true it is..

What should I charge people for web page development?

I have been designing websites for friends for free and now strangers are calling and wanting me to design their sites for a price. What is the going rate and how is it billed?

What should I charge people for web page development?
Depends on if its just HTML or if youre also using ASP, JAVA, a Server? Or just a bean server?

Will they be able to enter data and collect data and even store data?

If its just a simple html with links page, then I would say $20/hour.

If its more involved I would charge $50/hr.
Reply:The "going rate" is determined by things like.... where you're working (you don't even specify what country you're in, so it's very hard to give even an estimate)... what you can offer, how good you are and how you compar to the others... your reputation and track record...

Do a little market research, find out what the other guys are charging - and what you get for the money.

Then, consider what it will cost you to do the same... your time, your loss of earnings from other jobs, etc... the cost of running your office, your liability insurance, your phone bill, internet connection, hard- and software, and your taxes...

As for billing... you could set up a merchant account (Which costs you more money) and collect credit card payments... or you can have them send you checks, which means you need a business account at your bank - which costs you more money.

Then you'll need to have an attorney draw up standard contracts for you, to make sure that people do pay you...

Plus, you'll need to decide on how much support you're going to offer when they find bugs in your code... How much will you charge for changes to the site, later? And how many years later...? (Don't forget the cost of archiving your code )

How much is it going to cost you to keep up-to-date with changing technology... ?

Are you going to work in an office (costs a lot), at home (check your insurance, zoning laws, and local taxation) or on the customer's premises... (in which case, factor in your travel expenses)

And you'll need a VERY good CPA at the end of the year...

It's fun, being self-employed, but there's a price!
Reply:My son charges $250 for a basic one. Nothing up front, $125 after a preview and $125 on completion.

He has done some as high as $4500.

Please kindly give reasons.

Thank you

Advice needed please: which one first, cisco ccna or web development?
Take CCNA 1-4 first if you want to go into networking. I do not personally know about Cisco web development courses, but you will learn alot in CCNA 1-4. I would also recommend taking your certification exams immediately after taking the courses or while you are still in the class. Don't forget to take notes and study for the tests. Good luck with either choice you make.
Reply:CCNA first because you need to know about networking, IP address, internet and of course switch and cisco router
Reply:Take CCNA .

Starting a web development company - request % up front?

After 10 years of web design and development, I want to start my own design and development company.

I tried in the past but with VERY many fly-by-night types, and EVERYONE has a web idea, I insist on having my wages partially paid up front, at least at first.

This is reasonable correct?

What is a good idea or plan to put into place / writing, to get over this very important hurdle?

Starting a web development company - request % up front?
There is nothing wrong with asking for money upfront, as long as you can deliver the goods in the end. If you do fixed-price contracts (as you seem to indicate), you can ask for a percentage upfront. Alternatively, you can bill by the hour. This way, no client is ever into you for more than two weeks (or a month, depending on your billing schedule) of work...
Reply:hai this is Report It

Reply:For most print/graphic design work, as a client, when I get the quote, I expect to see the scope of work in detail -- ie. website -- 12 pages, message board, et cetera, for this sum within three wks. This is where the conditions come in -- you can specify that the client pay up anywhere from 30% - 50% upfront when they confirm the quote. However, I would not be willing to pay until you showed me something, at least.

Your clientele may balk at coughing up the money so early when they don't have a thing, so you may want to tie the sum to the first draft -- ie., when you submit the first round of drafts, they're expected to pay up the % before you move onto the next round, and the rest to be paid when the product is delivered.

If there's a small business association, you can check with them and see if they provide templates or legal advice on drawing up such contracts.
Reply:Absolutely you should try to do this.

You could spend hours working for someone who never pays you, that is just bad business.

I would think that 25% upon agreement to work together

Then 50% more due upon rough draft and approval

Then 25% upon completion.

Then both you and your customer will be on the exact same page. I always suggest this to my vendors, that way I get exactly what I paid for, and they get paid for the amount of work they do, as they do it. Fair for us both.

Good luck with your endeavor. It takes big ones to attempt to strike out on your own and I greatly respect that.
Reply:I owned a pretty successful web development and software engineering house for a while. I required 50% or the estimated costs up front. Just remember when clients call in for stuff not on the original proposal to tell them upfront before you begin the work. Also, try to get some maintenance contracts under your belt. They pay the bills. Another thing, do your work with legitimate brick and mortar companies and not with start ups. After all, business is business and you cannot get caught up in everyone else's great ideas and still be a success. Good luck to you.

I am 47 How can I motivate myself to learn web development asp.net?

plz help.

I am 47 How can I motivate myself to learn web development asp.net?
First, do you have to learn asp.net, or would you rather learn another framework, like PHP, JSP, Ruby on Rails? If you don't like Asp.net, try one of these alternatives.

Maybe you can set up a goal. If you're trying to develop a website, design the site, and give yourself a deadline in which to complete it. Maybe you could force yourself to donate $10 to charity for each day your deadline slips. At least someone can benefit from your laziness.
Reply:You can get motivated a number of ways:

1. desire for money

2. fear

3. ambition

etc.

but it all comes down to you. You can't fake yourself into motivating yourself. Either something motivate you, or it doesn't.

If you can't motivate yourself by fear of being "a loser" as you say, then I don't know what can be done. You need some confidence and a belief in yourself. Only you can give it to you.

What is the best school in the U.S. and Canada for learning web development and design?

I'd like to know from businesses what web developer/designer/artist they are most likely to hire. What school is the best and what do they look for in their portfolio and skill set?

What is the best school in the U.S. and Canada for learning web development and design?
When I hire people for my business, the first thing I look for isn't what school they attended. I look at their portfolio for their creativity. You can learn the basics and advanced techniques from any community college or University. You don't have to attend a Technical School.

It only matters how creative you are and how well you read the audience. For example, you could have attended ITT and learned how to build websites. I want to have a site built that has to do with children's games, how will you put the site together? You have to make sure the site is user friendly, easily to navigate by users of that certain age group, and the colors and layout used.

It is the creativity of their portfolio that brings me to hire that person. I do not care where they attended.
Reply:That's really a personal decision and will vary.

I need to do that , I need an improvement in my finances. Plz let me know what I should do? Or I will stay a loser all my life.

I am 47 How can I motivate myself to learn web development asp.net?
I think trimanga hit it. Microsoft targets the larger corporations who need internet and intranet services.

Most everyone else runs on a Linux box. guncoding the page in php and pulling files from subdomains housed in MySQL.

At least they should be.

Why not, if you want to do backend work, don't you pick up a old P-III and set it up like a web server. There plenty of Linux forums, and the more you ask the more you'll get to know people.

The class idea is great but I'd encourage you to get started on your own and make some mistakes in the meantime.

I'm 58 and have two sites that benefit from that knowledge, but I've decided what makes me happy is working on the content and graphic design.

And that's the key to anything. Do what you love to do, and live in the present. And then give yourself a present - to reminjd you of a particular accomplishment.

Good Luck
Reply:how can we know what motivates you? everybody works differently. Some get motivated by the money, others just enjoy working with computers. If you don't enjoy it, maybe it's better to look for something different.

some people work with a coach to find the best way of motivating them, or to get a clue which job they would like; sometimes, unemployment agencies can help with that, too. but if you're lacking motivation, then maybe programming is not the right thing for you.
Reply:Everyone deserves a fresh start.
Reply:motivation is up to oneself...when you get up each morning you need to say that you will accomplish this today....do this every day until it becomes a habit.... also, work on you self esteem...
Reply:Just think of how people are growing as old as you waiting for your incredibly cumbersome and slothful asp.net pages to partially load and fail to work properly. (Don't worry, it's not your fault, it's the nature of the beast.)
Reply:I recently took Visual Basic .net classes at a local community college.

I don't think I could have learned it online or from a book.

What is your reason for learning ASP.net? After studying VB.net I decided the web runs on Javascript and MySQL.

Reply:I'm a 23 year old college student studying Web Design. I'm currently in my senior year, and interning at a Web Design firm. I couldn't be happier with where I am in life right now. I love web design and it didn't take long to get me hooked.

If you decide to get into web development, make sure you find classes, etc that teach the newest and most up-to-date trends in not only development but design as well. It pays to have a strong sense of design as well as an understanding of development.

Make sure you learn CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). It is the newest and best way that websites can be designed. The old way with tables is an absolute headache and does not allow for nicely designed websites. Also try to learn Adobe Flash and its language called ActionScript. Most web companies use Flash alot for advertisements, microsites, and sometimes to create an entire web site. I would also try and take some design classes (learning Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator) and possibly a class teaching JavaScripting.

Good luck, if you need any additional info/help, feel free to email me.
Reply:Without knowing your background it's a difficult answer.

Web Development, would be geared more towards someone who is good at programming. You need to be fluent in at least one server-side programming language (C#/PHP/Python/JAVA/etc...)

If you don't know how to program or don't like programming, then web development is not a good path.

If you like graphic design, then that is a path you can take which may lead you into web layout designs and logos.

Windows Administration is someone who likes to be hands on in fixing the systems and the problems associated with them.

I did technical support for microsoft for over 3 years, and decided windows administration was not right for me. I enjoyed programming a lot and went into web development which I'm currently doing very happily.

If you want to talk more about this from my experience, then feel free to email me: irishtek@yahoo.com with any questions you have.
Reply:Web Development has a lot of potential but you MUST be creative and dynamic to be in that career, window Administrator would be easy and you will have to do that same job over years unless windows chages, so I would ask you to go for Windows Admiinstrator..

http://imageox.com
Reply:Either one, you'll have to be online alot to keep up as things change quickly and you'll have to keep up. You may find website development more fun, busy, active, varied, diverse. You'll have alot of websites to ping your interest (that is, unless you get hooked up with, say, one or two full-time clients, long-term...)

Windows Administration, you may find, is a long-term but perhaps higher-paying(?) commitment to one more focused area, perhaps more specialized and hard-core, focusing on depths and both hardware and software.

Website developers are somewhat more the artist types. Windows administrators are somewhat more the manager types. It all depends on how you see and feel yourself to be. Judge thyself, carefully.
Reply:Either;

If you have Design Skills, and can work in at Least Three different Major Languages for Development you should be fine; Other than that; Windows Admin would require Getting Broader skills in LAN, WAN, SAN, and some up and coming technologies. Most of the aspects of Windows Admin May Become obsolete quickly, especially if some market leaders come up the path quickly.

I see a lot of people of all ages in Development. Usually to get to Windows Admin, you need a long Period as a Tech, and then it is all office Politics as to where you go and how, depending on the size of the organization, and you may have to make a number of strategic moves quickly to other Organisations based on your qualifications

Web development.?

I have purchased a social networking script and I wanted to know how much it would cost me to hire a web developer to do all the programming.

Web development.?
I do web dev work, and I would NOT call myself inexperienced. I usually charged $30 /hr for projects like yours. Email me and I'd love to help you on your project.
Reply:You are looking at between $30-100 an hour. The low end would be for someone fairly inexperienced.
Reply:Ask Jon Postel.

Web development?

what type of questions would a web developer ask from his client before the implemintation of a website.

Web development?
Just think about what you need to do your job.

It's important that you are very specific about their expectations, too. You don't want them to expect one thing (one very unrealistic thing) when you've delivered something else. Remember they're hiring you, because they more than likely don't know how to do it themselves. Just be very detailed about the job. It's better to provide more information to the client than not enough. Good luck.
Reply:Ask questions that will give you a solid understanding about the scope of work. Nothing will ruin a project as badly as miscommunicated needs. Make sure you and the client fully understand everything that is to be included on the web site.

Web Development?

which one of these is more important in the development of a site?

user side issues

or server side issues

Web Development?
I would say server, but you should

have been more spacific to what

you were talking about.
Reply:What do you mean by issues ?
Reply:you need to be more specific,

For user side issue, design wise i would worry more about usability of the website . For server side, i would worry about the amount of sql query passed on for execution. And also the amount of interaction of website with components it depends on.
Reply:The answer to this question is totally subjective. Like the people that have already answered it all depends on what you are going to be trying to accomplish.

Some important questions to think about though are

Server-side -

What are the available features of the web server? Ie. Mysql, php, and versions are currently supported?

What types of services are you planning on running through your web site or applications there in?

Do those services require a database? How do you plan on interacting with that database?

How will you secure and protect any information that is transmitted and stored on the server?

--

Client-side -

What Browsers or applications will the client be using to access data on the server?

Are you planning on developing applications that are cross platform compatible? Ie. PC and MAC? If so then what language will you be writing your application in and does it require a plug-in? Ie. Flash, Quicktime, Acrobat, Java

Does the application require a specific version of a plug-in in order to function properly?

Plug-ins are client-side, they are installed in the browser, so you will need to check the version that is installed and have your application respond accordingly, either the application will load or it will not. Will you have a re-direction to the place where the latest version of the plug-in can be downloaded?

You will need to take in to consideration the possibility that certain users may have certain options and settings turned off, by choice, in their browsers, how will your application accommodate for this possibility? Ie. If your site or application requires JavaScript to be turned on to function properly and a user has JS turned off, then your application will not function properly and you should let them know that they need to have JS turned on for it to work properly.

--

I could go on and on.... You need to be more specific... unless you just needed some general information to answer a quiz or homework question.

Also, use wikipedia... its very informative, oh and it never hurts to try GOOGLE...

good luck.

Web development software other than Dreamweaver. How does it compare?

I need help in discovering a web development software, other than Dreamweaver. How does it compare in price, ease of use, learning curve, capabilities, etc.

I appreciate your time and insight.

Thank you

Web development software other than Dreamweaver. How does it compare?
Frontpage is terrible; anyone who says otherwise is very ignorant and/or inexperienced. No professional uses Frontpage, period. It creates garbage code.

Dreamweaver is currently the industry standard. NVU is the most popular free, open-source alternative. Of course, you do get what you pay for, so it's not going to be quite as easy to use or sophisticated as Dreamweaver. But for free, it's quite excellent. http://www.nvu.com/

Microsoft just released a new product designed to compete directly with Dreamweaver; it's called Expression and you can download a trial version from http://www.microsoft.com/expression - I believe it's $279 retail. It is geared towards professionals, so it is a little harder to use than Dreamweaver, but it is very powerful.
Reply:dreamweaver is the industry leader for web development. frontpage by microsoft is ok

html-kit by chamni is free. Good to use if you understand web development.

I like dreamweaver. There's also lots of tutorials out there.

Web development?

Can i build a web page using flash (with little animation)?

if yes, how can i do it. should i save it with particular extensions

thx

Web development?
yes. ! flash is a great animation and web development tool.

this tool is generally used in creating banners and flash snapshots or creations. these creations are often found on various web sites and greeting card sites.

LErning flash completely will cost you a course fee and some course material i.e. books.

thorough reading and practice will bring in the artist in you and you may be able to develop a great flash animation by yourselves. flash extensions are to be saved in the html code there fore the end resultant extension would be .htm. as the flash is incorporated into it.

- cheers.

Alternatively you could get hold of a copy of Dreamweaver and do it yourself. This would probably save you a bit of money, but could give you alot of headaches
