Unless you're already drawn to system administration, don't consider the Linux or Microsoft admin path; it's good to know some of it anyway but don't specialize here. Web development is not a sure bet but can be very profitable; however, you'll be competing both with the younger set and outsourcing firms. Web development is a pretty broad area so there is plenty of room to make your mark if desired.

Stating "database" is also pretty broad as well. However, most database-related jobs are highly in demand. You'll want to know how to leverage databases for web development as well. I would start here and see what you have an aptitude for. Make certain to include data mining or business intelligence in your studies; this should mesh somewhat well with your retail background so you can leverage your prior experience. Data mining is pretty hot still and may be much more attractive than the DBA route. Mixing disciplines isn't a bad thing either (e.g. all three areas you mentioned) but would take some time to master. The more you know, the more valuable you'll be to an employer or client.
Reply:I have done this kind of work for over 30 years. The other answer you got was very good.

I'd add that at your age it's going to be an uphill battle.

Look into getting certified in whatever you choose.
Reply:Database Administrator (dBA) on Oracle, SQL server will be good enough to find a job. But most of the dBA positions will need workstation and software coding to support your daily activities. For the best training and practice as well as consistence, goto some community colleges that offer the courses, sign up for three to four classes, and a year later you maybe able to receive a certificate. Otherwise, with no work experience with self learning without records, it is going to be very hard to get any related jobs.
Reply:You can also learn php, mysql, graphic designing and register at freelance websites like http://getafreelnacer.com/ and bid for all web designing projects posted there.
